Four simple steps

How to crop an image into a circle

ImageSmith gives you direct control over the round crop instead of guessing where the subject should sit. You can move and resize the selection before creating the final image.

  1. 1

    Choose an image

Select a photo from your phone or computer. The file is opened locally in your browser.

  2. 2

    Position the circle

Drag inside the circle to place the face, logo, or subject exactly where you want it.

  3. 3

    Adjust the crop size

Drag the white handle to make the round crop tighter or leave more space around the subject.

  4. 4

    Crop and download

Pick an output size, create the circular image, and download it as a PNG with transparent corners.

Make round images for profiles, teams, and brands

A circular crop is useful anywhere a square photo would be masked into a round frame. Exporting the circle yourself lets you control the composition before another site applies its own profile-picture crop.

Round profile pictures

Frame a clear headshot for social profiles, community accounts, and messaging apps.

Team and author photos

Create consistent circular portraits for About pages, directories, and bylines.

Logos and brand marks

Place a logo inside a clean round boundary while keeping the outside corners transparent.

Private, browser-based circle cropping

Your image is processed on your device. The crop tool does not upload the image file to ImageSmith, so personal portraits and private photos stay under your control.

If the source photo may contain camera or location data, you can also use the image metadata remover before sharing it.

Tips for a clean circular crop

  • Start with a sharp image and avoid enlarging a small face or logo more than necessary.
  • Leave a little space between the subject and the circle edge so the result does not feel cramped.
  • Keep important details inside the dashed boundary; everything outside it is removed.
  • Use the transparent PNG directly when the image needs to sit cleanly on different background colors.

Need exact dimensions afterward? Use the image resizer. For a rectangular result, use the standard image cropper, or reduce the finished file with the image compressor.

Circle crop image FAQ

How do I crop an image into a circle?

Choose an image, drag the circle over the part you want to keep, and use the white handle to adjust its size. Select Crop to Circle, then download the finished PNG.

Why does the circle crop download as a PNG?

A digital image is still stored on a rectangular canvas. PNG supports transparency, so the four corners outside the circle can remain invisible. JPEG does not support transparent corners.

Does ImageSmith upload or store my photo?

No. The image is decoded, cropped, and exported locally in your browser. The image file itself never leaves your device and is not stored by ImageSmith.

Can I move and resize the circular crop?

Yes. Drag inside the circle to move it, then drag the white handle to make the selected area larger or smaller. The controls support touch, mouse, and pen input.

Can I choose the size or a solid background?

Yes. Pick 256, 512 or 1024 pixels, or keep the original resolution. The corners are transparent by default; choose white or black instead if the place you are uploading to turns transparency into a black square.

Will circle cropping change my original image?

No. ImageSmith creates a new PNG download and does not modify the original file on your device.

What makes a good round profile picture?

Use a sharp source image, center the face or subject, and leave comfortable space around it. Keep important details away from the edge because anything outside the circle will be transparent.
